Gina Fischli employs children’s craft materials in her sculptures. Her fairytale castles, which resemble cakes in both size and mien, were shown at 303 Gallery in New York at the beginning of 2020.

Like many of the artists in Winterfest, Fischli’s studio practice has been affected by the pandemic, and she made this series of collages during the shutdown in London that she thought would be fitting for Winterfest’s arts and crafts theme.

Fischli is interested in collage’s history as an old craft tradition and its association with the world of decoration. She has long been inspired by the early Victorian collages and the parting walls one can still sometimes buy at London flea markets. While often connected to modernists like Braque, Picasso, and Schwitters, Fischli’s take on collage assumes a more comical, even aspirational tone.
